MINI PHOTO PROJECTS

This is like my online sketchbook; a place to experiment and make connections.

FACE MASKS

On my weekly litter picks in the Rhondda I've been photographing discarded face masks.

This is an image made up of 49 smaller photographs of discarded face masks on the ground. They are arranged in a grid format, 7 images from top to bottom and left to right. Many of them are blue in colour, some are patterned in tones of pink and some are black. The masks lay in a range of different settings, most of which are on dark tarmac of roads and pavements and the rest are in grass verges and brambles.

RHIGOS MOUNTAIN

The land is changing.
Farmland. Coal fields. Natural Resource Wales. Wind Farm.

In 2020, streets in the village where I now live experienced devastating floods. again. and. again.

The trees from the forests made of non native species were fell above these streets. Tree stumps, branches and debris was left on the now barren land.

These images were taken on the Rhigos mountain, a site of the most recent tree felling on the mountain range that separates the Rhondda Fach and Fawr.
I saw this alien blue line painted on stacks of fell trees in the shape of a meandering river. A coincidental visual connection between the deforestation and the floods in my village.
An investigation declared Natural Resource Wales not at fault.

This is a bold and bright blue square with the texture of a river underneath. The river is the one that flows through the Rhondda Fawr. The river head can be seen with stones and rocks emerging throughout he water.

This is a drawing of a singular line made in blue that machos the shape of the spray painted logs in another image in this collection. Separate from the background of logs, it appears like a river noted on a map as it minders around in curved lines.
This is a colour landscape image of wide tyre marks on a flat mountain top. The tyre tracks mark the route taken my the loggers and their large machinery. Tree stumps litter the left side of the image and small twigs and branches cover the ground on the opposite side. In the distance where the tracks move out of sight along the horizon is the raining section of forest, not yet cut down. In the distance are white wind turbines that blend into the white and grey clouded sky.

This is a long ad thin portrait image of a yellow and white plastic post stood amongst tall grass and wetland reeds. There is a cloudy sky above but a golden faint light illuminates the scene.
This is a rectangle and landscape photograph of forest of non native species of pine tree. In the foreground there is a muddy black section where large machinery has churned up the landscape. The photograph has been cut into vertical sections, much like the shape of the trees stood in the background of the image.
This image has been cut into two halves, this is the second one. Both images make up a scene of a mountain top. In the foreground is a black muddy section of earth that has been churned up by large machinery. Behind is a flat of yellow tall grass growing in a bog land and land that rises from this with small green non native pine trees clinging to the otherwise barren earth. The sky above is cloudy and grey.

This is a landscape colour photo of logs stacked up on top of each other in a giant pile. The logs fill the image and come in a variety of sizes. There seems to be dozens, if not hundreds of them all tightly packed together with yellow cut ends poking towards the camera. Across the middle section is a blue squiggly line of spray paint and the initials NRW, which stands for Natural Resource Wales, is painted in the right hand bottom corner of the picture.
This is a close up colour and landscape photograph of the initials NRW, which stands for Natural Resource Wales, painted in blue on the log ends. A jarring piece of snapped wood pokes out from the bottom right corner of the thick log the initials have been added to.
This is a colour landscape photograph of tree stumps that have been recently fell. The tumps and cut yellow edges of branches have been separated into rectangular shaped boxes and the background removed so that they float in a white background without the full context of where they are. Some of the boxes containing the tree stumps and cut branches are small, others large and dominate the collage.

PLASTIC

Caught in the wind. Changing sculpture.

This is a colour photograph of a pale green plastic bag caught in cherry blossom branches. The sky behind is white, giving this image a limited colour palette.

This is a colour photograph of a black plastic bag caught in bare Winter branches. The sky behind is grey, giving this image a limited colour palette and a bleak feeling.
